Flat in Fawley Road, Camden
Supporting alterations to the frontage of a property in a well-preserved conservation area requires careful consideration and justification. Mark was asked to support a proposal for infilling a recess in the front façade as well as alterations to fenestration and a rear extension.

The scheme needed careful justification in a Heritage Statement to ensure the proposals preserved the West End Green Conservation Area, Camden. Fawley Road was constructed c1910 by the builder A. Davis. The property was built as part of a pair during the Edwardian period in the Arts and Crafts style. The ground floor front façade was particularly attractive, constructed in red brick with moulded red brick dressings.
Mark was able to substantiate the proposals maintaining that there was no harm caused by the alterations planned. An assessment and statement of significance was provided taking into account national policy.
Conservation area designation does not exclude all possibility of alterations to properties within the area, but requires that it preserves or enhances the character or appearance. Fawley Road was included in the West End Green Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Strategy so there were additional policies to consider.
Mark was able to provide advice and assistance to the applicant. He was also able to provide a Heritage Statement adhering to national and local guidance.
