End House Heritage Statement

July 3, 2020 by Mark Price

Mark Price was asked to help with a Heritage Statement for End House in Devizes, Wiltshire.  The private house had been recently purchased and an application for Listed Building Consent was urgently required by its new owners in order to make the house more functional.

The house was listed Grade II in 1954.  It formed part of a pair of 18th Century houses and had been extensively extended to the rear in the Victorian period.

The property had a complicated history.  It comprised three buildings that were subsequently linked together: the main building at the front which probably dated to 16th Century but was upgraded and gentrified in Georgian period; a rear barn building, which was bricked in and linked to the main building in Victorian period; and a late Arts and Crafts style Victorian building at the rear, in turn also linked to the barn.

Internally, the front phase of development was considered most significant as it was the oldest part of the property and contained many original and historic features such the central staircase, doors, cornicing as well as plan form.  The later phases of development were acknowledged have historical interest but perhaps of lessor significance.

The statement addressed proposals for internal refurbishment works planned by the current owners.  Mark Price was able to assist by providing justification for the introduction of new bathrooms into the plan form as well as reasoning for other openings and specific upgrading.
