21 Cross Street, Islington
Cross Street in Islington was an important highway linking the Upper and Lower Streets. To this day it remains largely an 18th Century street, especially on the South side with its Georgian terraced houses.
Theatre and Heritage was asked to look at proposals to open-up the attic space of 21 Cross Street, a Grade II Listed Georgian terraced house. This included making a large opening in the spine wall and further openings onto the stairwell. It would make the top floor flat more usable and enjoyable.
Although the domestic plan form of a London terraced house is an important part of their character and special interest, at attic level, a greater degree of flexibility should be possible. Theatre and Heritage was able to justify why the proposals sustained the significance of the heritage asset.
A Heritage Statement was provided that made arguments for the internal alterations. A subsequent appeal was successfully argued and upheld by the Planning Inspectorate.
